At one point in our natural hair lives we all have, or will experience dry hair. It takes the oils that our scalp produces longer to travel down our natural curls, kinks, and coils which can result in dry hair. Whether it’s from water that’s too hot while washing your hair, the heater you keep on your desk at work, or the flat iron you’ve busted out for a few holiday parties, heat can contribute to dry hair. Excess heat can dry out the tendrils we’ve worked so hard to keep moisturized so it’s best to avoid it as often as possible. Don’t use super hot water to wash your hair because in addition to drying out your curls it can also cause heat damage. Try to stretch your hair naturally instead of using a flat iron too often, because again, dry hair and heat damage.
Double up on moisture
During the cold sometimes freezing temperatures of winter our hair can become extremely dry and brittle. There isn’t as much moisture in the air and often we avoid washing our hair as often due to the cold weather, making it hard replenish oils. Now is a great time to double up on moisture but not just any oils. You don’t want to use oils that aren’t natural, and can clog your pours. Be sure to wash and shampoo with your favorite tgin shampoos and conditioners. Drink plenty of water
Water in my book is like the cure-all for everything! When your body is well hydrated internally it can insure that you are receiving the nourishment you need both internally and externally. When you don’t drink enough water it can result in an array of health issues and can manifest physcially in dry skin, hair, nails and even sickness. Drinking plenty of water also helps your body flush out harmful toxins. Drinking at least a gallon of water a day is ideal but if you can’t commit to that try getting your water from fruits and veggies also that contain tons of water like celery, cucumbers, oranges watermelon and berries.
As cute as it may be, wearing our natural hair out often is not always ideal to keeping our hair moisturized. Wearing your hair out can result in snagging on coats and scarves, becoming dry and brittle from the cold air, and can lead to breakage. Wearing protective styles helps to keep hair moisturized and protected. Braids, twists, and buns are all great ways to keep hair protected during the winter.
While dry hair can almost seem inevitable in the winter there are definitely ways to combat dryness and keep hair protected. Be sure to always do what works best for your hair and follow the steps above!
