Top 5 Vitamins for Natural Hair Growth

By July 22, 2012Thank God Im Natural

Regardless of how beautiful our natural hair is, the early stages of transitioning can be time consuming, tedious and a challenge. Even after we’ve done the “big chop,” we still need to manage and care for our natural locks. Fortunately, this task can be made easier by maintaining a healthy diet chocked full of exercise, proper eating, lots of H20 and vitamins. Below is a list of four essential vitamins that can keep your hair strong and damage free, because continual bad hair days are not cute!

Iron

If you have thin, soft hair, start stocking up on iron. The vitamin, found mostly in lean red meats or dark green veggies like spinach, will help reduce hair loss. By reducing hair loss, we natural divas can see the full potential of our gorgeous God-given hair.

Vitamin C

Aside from all the other great things Vitamin C does for the body, it also helps make your hair grow. Who knew? If you’re not into oranges, try grapefruit, pineapple, kiwi and cantaloupe. These citrus fruits will make your fro fantastic, your locks luxurious and your hair heavenly.

Vitamin B5

For the “seasoned” naturals, those few gray hairs may throw us off guard, or come a few years earlier than expected. Not to fret. To help prevent our hair from graying, start chomping on the whole grain cereals, substitute your eggs for egg whites and cook up some liver.

Vitamin E

Just like how our blood needs circulation, upping our Vitamin E intake will enhance scalp circulation as well. Not quite getting it? Think of your scalp as a clogged drain. The drain won’t work properly if it’s filled; the same rule applies to our scalp. Some of the best sources for Vitamin E are leafy greens, nuts and dried beans.

Hair Pills (Biotin)

While there are a gazzilion and one different methods to achieve long, healthy hair, some women have decided to add hair pills into their diet. GNC’s Ultra Nourish Hair (retail price $17.99) offers women 120 tablets made of Vitamin A, C and E along with Biotin, and other ingredients. Biotin supports healthy hair growth. The verdict is still out on how well hair pill work. A lot of women say it did nothing for their hair, while others said they became Repunzel. If you want to add it into your diet, consult with your primary care physician. If he or she gives you the green light, by all means ladies, go for it.

Remember, it takes about eight weeks before you will begin to see results. Eating an orange on a Tuesday won’t make your hair touch the middle of your back by Wednesday, but it will be a good step in the right direction. Working up a sweat and proper diet will not only have positive health benefits, but c’mon mommas, it’ll keep us lookin’ fly too!
